RECIPE: Iced Earl Grey Houjicha latte

Looking for a creamy and aromatic iced tea latte with a unique twist? This Iced Houjicha Latte with Earl Grey Syrup combines the roasted, nutty flavor of Japanese Houjicha Powder with fragrant Earl Grey syrup and your favorite cold milk. It's smooth, lightly sweet, beautifully layered, and perfect for a refreshing afternoon treat.

Tools & Equipment

  • Bamboo whisk (chasen)
  • Fine-mesh sieve
  • Matcha or tea bowl
  • Drinking glass
  • Measuring spoon

Ingredients (for 1 latte)

Latte

  • 3 grams Houjicha Powder
  • 50 ml cold water
  • 150 ml cold milk
    • oat, almond, soy, coconut, or dairy milk
  • 2 tbsp Earl Grey syrup
  • Ice cubes

Homemade Earl Grey Syrup

200 ml water · 200 g sugar · 3–4 Earl Grey tea bags

Bring the water to a boil and steep the Earl Grey tea bags for 5–7 minutes. Remove the tea bags, add the sugar, and stir until fully dissolved. Let the syrup cool completely and store refrigerated.

Directions

Step 1 — Prepare the Houjicha

Sift the Houjicha Powder into a bowl. Add the cold water and whisk for about 15 seconds until smooth and lightly frothy.

Step 2 — Prepare the Earl Grey Latte

Fill a glass with ice cubes and add the Earl Grey syrup. Pour in the cold milk, leaving about 2–3 cm of space at the top.

Step 3 — Add the Houjicha Shot

Slowly pour the whisked Houjicha over the milk to create a beautiful layered effect.

Step 4 — Serve

Enjoy as is, or gently stir before drinking to combine the roasted Houjicha, fragrant Earl Grey, and creamy milk.

Tip

Also delicious with Matcha instead of Houjicha! For a slightly sweeter latte, simply add a little more Earl Grey syrup.
